Director of Tax
Duncan Gates, EA, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, RICP®, joined Five Star Partners in March 2023 as the Director of Tax. In this role, Duncan is responsible for oversight and management of the tax preparation process, ensuring that both business and individual clients are successful in the filing of their annual tax returns. Additionally, Duncan partners with others in the office with a focus on tax planning, financial planning, and risk management.
Prior to joining the firm, Duncan spent seventeen years in the home office of Avantax Wealth Management℠, the broker dealer with which Five Star Partners is affiliated. Duncan is an Enrolled Agent and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™.
Duncan graduated from Texas A&M University, earning business degrees in Accounting and Finance. During his tenure at Avantax Wealth Management, he furthered his education by obtaining the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®), and Retirement Income Certified Professional (RICP®) designations, as well as the Series 7, Series 63, and Texas life insurance licenses. He is currently completing the program to become a Registered Social Security Analyst (RSSA).
Duncan and his wife Amber live in Melissa, TX with their son, daughter, and their two dogs. A diehard baseball fan, he is currently working on his goal of visiting all 30 MLB stadiums across the country.
